Some of you may remember me posting about NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day website. I love this site, and I literally check it every single day. I have it bookmarked right along with the DK forum and one or two other news sites).

The reason I'm opening this thread is to hopefully get some other people involved. It's really fascinating. The pictures are great, the explanations are concise and adequate and provide plenty of searchable information. Even better is APOD's searchable Astropix Archive. I have saved so many pictures from this site that my hard drive is getting a little cluttered, so I might have to break out a few discs and start over!

Seriously, I love this stuff. I know it's not as interesting to a lot of people, and in fact I have even run into many arguments that the Space Program is a waste of time and money. But I couldn't disagree more. There is so much that can be learned and applied by studying astronomy that I find such an argument to be tremendously ignorant. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but I would prefer to challenge those who have that view to educate themselves a little more and then reevaluate their stand on it.

And APOD is a great place to start in learning something that may even change your life. I find this type of material to be very humbling, and it reminds me every day that the latest news about Brand and Angelina is not the biggest thing in the Universe. We are such an ego-centric species, a little perspective can be a very very good thing.

Today's pic, An Alaskan Volcano Erupts, is one of the coolest images of a volcano I have ever seen.

The picture was taken from the international space station.

I checked it out for a while, than I've been reading so much and making a lot of posts in the Koontz forum that I forgot about all other sites basically. I'll try to check them out more often. That Volcano pic is awesome.

Arethusa, if you got my PM, then this is the thread you should find. This site is awesome. I literally check it every day, along with Get Fuzzy, My MSN, Fox News, my fantasy baseball team, and the Koontz Forum, it's one of my regular stops.

The images are incredible, and the explanations are short, precise and accurate, the way everything should be.
