i haven't booted up in safe mode in years. you need to hold down one of the F keys as the computer boots up. i think it is F3, but as i said, i haven't done it in years.

I DID IT!
After trying a hundred different things, I finally found the solution to my problem. And it didn't involve booting up in safe mode (which I tried, and it didn't work). Because the problem really was all about viewing the bottome of an un-resizable menu window so that I could reset the contorl bar for pixel ammounts in the settings menu, what I needed to do was figure out a way to move the control button without actually dragging it to the right with the mouse/cursor. It took me a long time to figure out, and a few efforts digging through my comp's Help Guide, but I finally found that by holding down the Tab Key and scrolling down with the mouse wheel that I could move the pixel bar. Then I simply hit Enter to restart my comp with the new settings, and things were back to normal. Anyway, my headache can now subside. Thanks for the help and suggestions anyway, everybody. But it is a little satisfying that I figured it out on my own. For future reference, I am going to create a restore point for my computer. I have a program in Windows ME that allows you to punch in a few command keys, and your comp will restart without losing any files or anything, and return default settings on your desktop to however you set them the last time you updated the Restore Point. That way if I have any future issues like this I can just hit a few keys and not worry about it so much. |

i keep system restore disabled because it allows viruses and trojans to restore themselves even if you run a virus swcan to remove them.

Didn't know that. But I haven't had any serious virus problems, so I don't see it as being too much of a problem. And if I do have any virus problems, I'm assuming I can just reset the Restore Point to a new date after the virus has been swept clean, right?

no. it comes right back. the only way to get rid of it is to disable the system restore, then run a virus scan.
