I have a 1985 honda spree that I have been working on for a while now. After patching the gas tank, cleaning the carb, adding a new battery and spark plug, I have gotten it to run. It starts up right away, but then after I drive it for about 5-10 mins it will die on me. It seems to only happen when i go down hill or have high rpms (around 20-30 mph). Once it dies it won't start, and i have to wait another 5-10 minutes before it will. Any advice as to what it could be?

when it dies, try removing the gas cap and then restarting it. sounds like it has a plugged tank vent.

I tried removing the gas cap,and nothing. I've been thinking that maybe the spree is over-heating? Maybe the oil injector is operating properly. Could that be the issue?

that is a possibility that it is over heating, but usually a 2 stroke will not overheat unless all the fins on the cylinder are packed with debris. and the piston would lock up. a way to tell if it is overheating is to pull the muffler off then look up into the port at the piston side wall. if there is any overheating going on, the piston will have smears or scratches in it. the exhaust port area and that side of the piston are the hottest area in any 2 stroke engine.
it sounds to me like you have a fuel flow problem. if removing the gas cap did not help, then the next step is to look at the petcock. the Honda spree uses a vacuum operated petcock if I remember correctly. it's been more than 15 years since I worked on one so my memory is a little foggy. but look to see if it has a cracked vacuum line coming from the engine, not the carb. if it does not have a vacuum operated petcock, then look for debris in the tank. |
