I say James Patterson is a good writer, because his books do what they're supposed to do: entertain. They're not literary books and don't pretend to be. Patterson is just an entertainer, his books are fast-paced, fun and easy to read.

Not my favorite author by a long shot, but he deserves all the money he has made.

No, he is a bad writer. But he is a good entertainer. And I've enjoyed a few of his books. Though I must say I don't think I'll be going back because of how many other authors I have discovered.

I have to vote no. Now I understand why people like him, but I don't think his writing itself is that good. He himself admits he just writes novel outlines and publishes them as novels. That can be fast-paced and entertaining--and like I said, I understand that--but it's not good writing in my book.

To me, if a novelist is entertaining, than he's a good writer by definition. I realize some people demand more, but I think it's very tough to entertain, and I respect anyone who can do it on a regular basis.

I think you can be entertaining without being a good writer. I think Richard Laymon is a very entertaining writer, but I don't think he's a good writer. It's a subtle distinction, but I think "good" writing has to do with style and form, not just entertaining the reader. A truly great writer can entertain and exhibit clean and innovative writing. I just don't feel Patterson qualifies.
