I got a Craftsmen ( Briggs and Stratton) front wheels self propelled push style mower for free. The self-propelled feature was not working I was told. The belt is missing but I went ahead and opened the gear box to have a look since I could not turn the pulley by hand ( with engage lever in either direction) I got the mechanism working with the crank case cover off. When I sandwich the cover back together the spindle gear binds. It appears that rust on the shaft is rubbing against the crank case and binding it up. I'll attempt to remove the rust.
Is there an exploding diagram available so I can make sure I've got the washers in the correct place? And to verify the orientation of the flat side with regard to the axle bushings etc. Thanks.

go to www.sears.com. click on the parts tab. on this page type in the model number of the mower. the decal is located on the rear of the deck on most models, and depending on which year it is, the location may vary. the number you are looking for will say, for example, 917.xxxxxx. the engine will have sears numbers on it as well. and they will be, for example, 143.xxxxxx. the 143. that i used as an example is a tecumseh engine number. i'll look up all the sears number system and post it here for you in a bit.
once you type in the mowers model number, it will bring up a page asking you if you want to see breakdowns, or part numbers list. it's pretty self explanatory.

ok, here are all of the manufacturer codes used by sears to identify every product they sell. the 3 and 4 digit numbers to the left of the decimal point tell you who the manufacturer is. the numbers to the right are usually the manufacturers original part number. for example, 143.654398 would be a tecumseh engine, and the complete engines part number is 654398. not a real number, i just made that number up.

Wow, that's awesome Don. You didn't have to type all that stuff now but I'm sure it will come in handy! BTW, I purchased a huge Tecumseh library of manuals online for about $11. Takes some time finding what you are looking for. ID #'s are explained etc. All very good info. Thanks
