it helps prevent different kinds of cancer in both males and females, so if you're not planning on breeding them it is generally better for their health. also some animal shelters have programs that you can apply to that will help cover some of the expense of getting it done if you meet certain income standards. they'd rather help people stop their animals from breeding than deal with the unwanted animals coming into the shelter later.
