In the States, they punish the bar owners, not smokers. This way they can collect more fines.
As for the politicians, they never think the laws apply to them anyway. Our governor was in a big car accident where he made his driver speed and he wasn't buckled up.

The business in the local pubs has slowed down so much! There are more people outdoors than there are in. I can see, as WW said, companies closing down. I was unsure of how the ban would be policed, but apparently you are given 3 strikes, then you are barred from every pub/club in the area (almost like an ASBO)
The funniest thing was that a Liberal Democrat politian was cautioned for smoking on a train!

Of course they would never stop subsidizing tobacco farmers...

I had this conversation with my husband back when we just got married, and he was a militant anti-smoker. I told him eventually they will come after french fries and such, and he just laughed at me. Well what do you know, a "fat tax" has already been proposed more than once.

This law was passed in New York State years ago. A lot of businesses closed because of it at first, but people have gotten used to it since then. Now people complain about having to walk through a cloud of smoke on their way into work becuase the smokers all have to stand outside. Some people are just never happy, even after they get what they want.

Cocaine is for the rich. Other recreational drugs are for the rich. Cigarettes will always be a blue-collar fix. It's the only drug many people can indulge in (legally) on their 15-minute union break. And now middle class America has to bear the tax burden because the Democrats want to punish the tobacco companies by (surprise!) raising industry-specific taxes to teach people a lesson.

I smoke and I think if they don't want people to smoke stop selling them and enjoying all the taxes they get from them. We pay almost $12.00 a package here.

I thought a pack was expensive here (i'm seriously restraining from using the term f**s, as I know we use it for different reasons) my mum now rolls her own "cigarettes", the smoking ban will kill her.

I find it very unfair that Natives get free medical, dental care, tution etc. and don't have to pay taxes. I thought we had it bad in England.
